Cremation at Schnauss North East Florida Funeral Home and Cremation Services
Cremation Services
Cremation only refers to the manner in which you or your loved one has chosen to deal with the physical remains. We want you to know that this decision doesn’t limit the ways you can honor your loved one's life. We heartily suggest that you have a funeral or memorial service, because your need for such a healing experience is not lessened by the decision to be cremated. Again, the options are limited only by your imagination. We hope that you will contact us to discuss the wide variety of celebratory options open to you.

Testimonials:
I recently needed the services of a funeral home as I had lost my mom. I knew right away who I would use because of the quality of service I received in the past. See, no one knows the grief and pain of losing a child (my daughter) unless they too have lost a child. The service provided by the professionals at Schnauss, I think the name of the business was different then, was highly professional, supportive, and compassionate. Every detail of the service provided was to uplift the family members in their time of loss and grief. I highly recommend Schnauss funeral home to anyone needing their services.

Cremation doesn’t preclude having a funeral service, or limit your options if you’d like to have one. Planning a personalized service can be an important step in grieving and accepting the death of a loved one. The funeral service allows family, friends, and community an opportunity to gather and share in honoring the memory and celebrating the life of the person you’ve lost.
There are three basic options for cremation:
Traditional Funeral Service Followed By CremationAs with a traditional funeral, there is usually a visitation for public viewing and a funeral service, typically within two to three days of the death. The service is followed by cremation rather than burial in a casket.
A cremation casket, specifically designed to be used in the cremation process, or a rental casket is used. The service can be held at a church, funeral chapel, or another place that has meaning to the loved one or family, and the casket can be open or closed during visitation.
Following the viewing, service or ceremony, and eventual cremation, the cremated remains can be buried, scattered, or returned to the family.
Memorial ServiceA memorial service is, essentially, a funeral service without the body of the deceased present. The cremation usually takes place a day or two following the death, and the memorial service takes place sometime after – in some cases, weeks or months after the death.
An urn holding the ashes may be present at the service, held at a funeral home, a church, or any place that is meaningful, such as a park.
The final disposition of the remains would typically take place after the service, which might include taking the urn home, burying the urn at a cemetery, placing the urn in a cremation niche or scattering the ashes somewhere meaningful.
Direct CremationThis is the most basic type of service, and is sometimes called immediate cremation or simple cremation. The body is cremated, and the cremated remains are returned to the family without a funeral, graveside, or memorial service.
For Cremated RemainsThe United States Postal Service (USPS) is the only legal carrier for shipping human (and animal) cremated remains, both domestically and internationally. Private carriers like UPS, FedEx, and DHL do not handle these shipments.- Service Requirement: All shipments must use Priority Mail Express service (domestic or international).
- Packaging:
- Effective March 1, 2025, USPS-branded Priority Mail Express Cremated Remains boxes are required. These kits are available free of charge from the USPS Postal Storeand include a sturdy box, tape, and a plastic bag.
- The package must be clearly marked with the words "Cremated Remains".
- Documentation: While not always required for domestic shipping, it is recommended to include a copy of the death certificate, cremation certificate, and a burial transit permit inside the box and carry copies with you.
- International Shipping: You must verify that the destination country permits the importation of cremated remains by checking the USPS International Mail Manual (IMM)individual country listings. Customs forms must indicate the contents are "cremated remains".

- Safeguarding personal identity
- To ensure security, a personal identification band is placed on your loved one at the moment your loved one is transferred to our care.
- Unique Tracking System
- Upon arrival, your loved one’s data is logged into our tracking system and assigned an identification number. This number is used to track every phase of the cremation process. Our tracking system includes date and time of arrival to our facility along with the name of the funeral director.
- Funeral Director Supervision
- At every step in the cremation process, a licensed funeral director will be supervising the process. This supervision ensures that the highest level of care and respect is given to your loved one.
- Family Identification
- We will ask you, or a representative, to positively identify your loved one prior to the cremation.
- Cremation Log Book
- Immediately prior to the cremation process, the funeral director takes your loved one to the crematory. Upon arrival, his or her personal identification is noted in the cremation log book. This log shows the name of the individual, date and time of the cremation, identification number, and crematory operator’s name. Our crematory log accounts for the date and the start time and is initialed by a cremation technician before and after the cremation.
- During the Cremation
- As a funeral home, we accommodates all religious and personal preferences.
- After the Cremation
- After the cremation, the family should contact the funeral home for the urn. At this time, if you so choose, we will provide a dignified setting in which to receive the urn, where you may spend a few moments, privately, in quiet reflection.
- Celebration of Life
- We will assist in planning a funeral or memorial service either before or after the cremation, which will appropriately celebrate the life of your loved one. A meaningful ceremony provides an opportunity for family and friends to pay tribute to your loved one and to share the memories of a lifetime.
- Aftercare
- Grieving is an on-going process, one which does not necessarily end with the funeral. For this reason, we have dedicated staff members who are available to help you deal with the continuing grief from the loss of your loved one.
